In rural areas of Laos, apart from school text books, most children have never seen a book, and there is currently no system for getting books into rural villages, some of which involve a day or two of travel from the nearest road. To help overcome this, a Laos based organisation called Big Brother Mouse organise book parties and provide a mobile library service to such areas. For more information about Big Brother Mouse and their Book Parties, checkout their website.
A friend of mine and fellow volunteer, Karlee Taylor, is currently based in Khammouane Province within the Nakai Nam Theun National Protected Area, which is an isolated rural area in southern Laos. Needs or Wants has already helped Karlee raise over $1200 to host 3 book parties and mobile libraries for the Nakai and surrounding Districts which are in the process of being organised.
There was an amazing amount of support and interest for this project, so we'll keep the lines open and when we raise another $400, Karlee will organise for another district to host a book party.

Thank you all for your amazing contributions!
ReplyDeleteWe have reached our target now to run a book party and purchase a mini library!
If you would still like to contribute to this cause this just means we will purchase more books, meaning that there may be more than one village in which all children receive their own book in addition to the library.
Once again many thanks! I will send photos as we start to make this happen!
Best,
Karlee
