Over recent years there has been a sharp increase in drug and alcohol abuse amongst teenagers in Laos. Drug dealers 'employ' local kids to sell amphetamines in return for a small profit, and in a lot of cases the kids then start using the drugs themselves and end up becoming addicts and turning to crime to support their habit.Unfortunately, there are very few programs or organisations that are specifically designed to assist at risk youth, and efforts are generally focussed on helping those who have already developed an addiction as opposed to preventing it in the first place.
For the past 5 years a work colleague of mine, Mr. Santi, has been devoting his spare time and money to help steer teenage kids in his home village away from drug and alcohol abuse by getting them involved in sport, fitness and additional education classes that are conducted during school holidays in the homes of local volunteers.
Santi's Sports Academy is currently seeking funds to the value of $300 to purchase new sporting equipment, educational supplies and nutritional supplements.
Thanks, Joe.

Hi Joe,
ReplyDeleteI just chucked a virtual pineapple in your account (50 bucks).

Big thanks to the Australian Volunteers in Laos - AYAD's, AVID's, ABV's and Red Crossers - for chipping in a total of $165 which went towards kitting the kids out with new soccer boots. For some of the kids, this was the first time they have ever owned a pair of soccer boots, so many happy faces!
ReplyDeleteThis also means that with everyone's help we have met - actually exceeded - the target of $300 for Santi's Sports Academy, however I will be continuing to provide support and assistance to these guys as needed, so if you feel like sharing some more money in this direction let me know.
Thanks again to everyone that has helped out with this little project, Joe.
